Venture Capitalist MCs
I made my millions short-selling at the peak of the coke-rap bubble.

amateur
Maybe he can't play guitar or drums, but he's either got a really good ear or had musicians help him out. I'm impressed.

iz you tone deaf, bitches?
Test your musical memory and tone discrimination here. I'd recommend using the best speakers/headphones you have - some of the pitch tests use mid-bass region tones which you won't hear well on cheaper equipment.

I scored 94.4% correct. I think that makes me a little bit awesome.

I'm curious, though, where Lil' Jon would rank...

331 club
Ok, so anybody worth anything up in the M-P-L-S has probably at least heard of the 331 club. A nice place, post-renovation - decor is above average for a neighborhood bar, drinks aren't too spendy, no cover for shows - I can almost forgive them for having such poor acoustics.

I guess the city wants to shut them down, though - I don't think the 331 would continue to exist without live music. "Proper zoning"? wtf. Mayslacks' is two blocks away and has shows there - are they zoned differently? What about Gasthof's, a mile north on University? I'd hate to live within a block of there on the weekends.

Anyway, email the contacts listed in the strib article and tell them they're doucheslaves. Or...well, a polite email couldn't hurt either.

abstraction
Ok, so for whatever reason I find certain abstract/experimental/minimalist/drone music *really* compelling. But not all of it - for example, the acclaimed Venice by Fennesz only really struck me for a track or two, mostly because the general tonal balance was so abrasive. (Who really wants to listen to a bunch of noise above 8khz anyway? my eardrums hurt just thinking about it)

So being the pitchfork whore I am, I obtained one of their recent 'best new music' reccommendations - Tim Hecker's Harmony in Ultraviolet - and fuck, it's really fucking good. I haven't heard a [see previous attempt to describe the genre] song this good since track3a(2waynice) off Keith Fullerton Whitman's Playthroughs. And that was the standout track on the album...

I'm definitely buying this, and I'm not even halfway through the album yet. Definitely not my usual modus operandi. But if you happen to be incredibly suggestible, and are thinking about running out and buying this, I'd probably recommend hearing most of the album first. Most people don't like music with this little structure....
